How the money is being spent

During our stay in March 2005 some of the money raised was used to provide the following items.

 

100 soft toys; 30 dolls; 50 large toy cars; 20 cricket bats; 20 sets of wickets; 100 tennis balls; 24 foot balls; 1000 school exercise books; 600 pencils; 100 pencil sharpeners; 100 erasers; 2 bicycles

Anuladevi Balkia Vidyalava School in Galle

Intercom system to be installed so pupils can be addressed by the head teacher in the event of an emergency. They are so frightened that another tsunami will strike. They lost many of their school friends.

School computer repairs and internet access fees paid for a year so twinning with Llandogo Primary School can be established.

1000 nappies 50 child’s hair shampoos 36 boxes of wet wipes 100 bars of soap 50 toothbrushes and paste; 4 desk fans; 10 bust bins; 1000 bin liners; 4 paddling pools; 50 pairs of scissors; 600 drinking water bottles for children; 500 printed books for school children School bell

Repairs to Tom’s tuk tuk enabling him to start earning money again

Rebuilding Wasantha the wood carvers shop in Unawatuna

50 tins of biscuits 4 large (very large) jars of sweets.Numerous cakes biscuits and snack type foods. We tried wherever possible not to hand out cash

200 postcards and a new washing up bowl for the beach postcard seller. He now just needs more customers

Food parcels for 70 families (over 300 people) containing 2 kilos of fresh vegetables, tea, sugar packets of dried milk, a coconut and biscuits. This food run will be carried out monthly for the next 7 months.

Refurbishing two schoolrooms in Unawatuna Primary School . Including ceiling fans and lights. A plaque will be placed saying ‘Refurbished by our friends in the Wye Valley ’

New callipers for three schoolteachers who had suffered for polio. This will involved three more full days in Colombo for fitting and further treatment as each person was in such a bad way

New doors for Asha and the Honey man shop. The shop has been repaired but they could not afford the large doors that close of the front of the shop. They should be able to open very soon

Sewing materials including cloth, cotton, silks, stencils and patterns for Dissanayaka School for Children with Special Needs

35 musicals instruments for Unawatuna School . The new orchestra will be called something along the lines of the Wye Valley School Band.

Kitchen equipment for a number of people’s homes

The spectacles that we collected (approximately 1000 pairs) where given to the Rotary Club of Galle for distribution
