Silverback

Sri Lanka Beach
Silverback's house after tsunami

Beach Trade

Silverback used to sell fruit on the beach and was also trying to grow orchids in this garden. When I saw him on Christmas day he had diversified into selling jewellery and told me that he had never been happier.

He sobbed in my arms on Boxing Day having lost many members of his family and his possessions. His house remains in tact but the water flooded it to ceiling level. His crops have been destroyed and his well, used for drinking water, filled with sea water and debris. He has nothing, our help would be so well received. Silverback's home is pictured here after the wave...

Update

On our return in March 2005 one of the first people that we saw was Silverback. He is known more commonly as Mike. He was so pleased to see us and is doing well. He had been given a bicycle by some other friends and was planning his next business venture.

He is a well known local character and like many people depends on tourists for his income.
