Wasantha the Wood Carver

Sri Lanka Beach
Finished plaque

A plaque for friend in the Wye Valley...

Wasantha is a wood carver with a shop very close to beach near the Villa Hotel in Unawatuna. His shop and his stock were washed away by the sea on Boxing Day 2004. We have a bought a number of his carvings on previous visits and during our visit in March 2005 we found his house. We had long talks and decided to help him re build his shop. Construction started on a Monday and Sally and I attended the opening ceremony on Thursday. He and his wife were so happy and gave us one of the very few items that they had managed to find after the waters receded on Boxing Day, a fabulously carved turtle complete with scars.
